Donovan finished third in the meet with 29 points.

The team was led by the first place finish of Mike O'Malley (2:03.4), Connor Delaney (2:06.1), Brandon Zisa (2:01.2), and Graham Matthews (2:03.5) in the 4 X 800 relay (8:14.24) and the first place finish of Sean Fitzgerald (52.2), Mike O,Malley (53.7), Nick Chiarella (52.7), and TJ Lynch (51.7) in the 4 X 400 relay (3:30.53).

The High Hurdle Relay also would have won by half a second but was disqualified.

There are 6 running relays and Donovan had the potential of winning 4 of them. Anthony Cappello was missing due to sickness. With him Donovan would have easily won the 4 X 200 as well.

Millrose Relay Trial Results

A great night at the races. It was an all star competition of 4 X 400 relays.
Unfortunately the Donovan 4 X 400 meter team came up short of qualifying. The team's effort was outstanding with Sean Fitzgerald leading off in 50.8, Nick Chiarella 51.7, Anthony Cappello 51.2 and TJ Lynch 54.4.

The athlete of the meet is the full relay team for a focused all out effort by all.

TJ fell less then 10 yards from the finish line in a gutsy effort to pass Camden and qualify. His fall cost him 3.5 seconds and gave the team a 3:28.29 time. Even with his fall, the team's time is within 1/2 a second of the school record.

I estimate that if TJ didn't stumble he would have run 51.0 and the team would have run 3:24.7 which would have been good for 3rd in these trials. To put his race into perspective, TJ's first 200 was 23.1 which is faster then the school record for 200 meters.

The county all time record for the 4 X 400 meter relay is 3:24.4 by Lakewood at the Nationals in 2003. This record will come to Donovan in the next few weeks.

Millrose 4 X 400 meter trials

We will be leaving Donovan for the Millrose 4 X 400 Meter Relay Trials at the New Balance Track & Field Center in NYC at 4:30pm on Jan. 14. The race is scheduled for 8:15pm. The Donovan 4 X 400 team consists of Sean Fitzgerald, Nick Chiarella, Anthony Cappello, and TJ Lynch.
They have recorded the 3rd fastest time in the state to date.

The teams that should be in contention for the two spots in the Millrose race are:

Trenton - 3:26.94 in NYC at the Hispanic Games
Seton Hall - 3:27.4 in NYC at the NJCTC Relays
Donovan - 3:28.4 in NYC at the NJCTC Relays
Pope John XXIII - 3:29.1 in NYC at the NJCTC Relays
Rahway - 3:29.65 - in the Jersey City Armory at the Union County Relays
Columbia - 3:31.02 - in NYC at the Bishop Loughlin Games
Freehold Twp. - 3:31.53 - in Toms River at the Burns Relays

This should be a great race and with an "A" effort by all team members the team could qualify for the "show" by finishing first or second.

Ocean County Relay Results

Oh!!! so close. Jackson Liberty 45, Donovan 44.

Highlights of the meet include a meet record 4 X 400 meter relay time of 3:30.54. The team was (Sean Fitzgerald 51.9, Mike O'Malley 53.7, Nick Chiarella 52.2, and TJ Lynch 52.7). Also in the winner's bracket was the 4 X 800 meter relay team of (Mike O'Malley 2:06.0, Connor Delaney 2:08.3, Brandon Zisa 2:04.7, and Graham Matthews 2:03.0) in 8:22.06.

As usually the Athlete of the Meet was a tough decision. But, the award goes to Dan Koerner for a great effort in the 1600 meter leg of the 4th place Distance Medley Relay. He ran a personal best of 4:35.7 coming from the back of the pack and almost finishing second place for the team.

NJCTC Relays - notes and results

Despite a stomach flu virus (Nick Chiarella recovering and TJ Lynch and Sean Fitzgerald in the middle of it) the 4 X 400 relay gutted out a state second place time to date of 3:28.4. Only Seton Hall has run faster and the time looks good for a seed in the Millrose 4 X 400 trials to be held at the New York New Balance Track and Field Center on Jan. 14. First or second in these trials guarantees a place in the suburban 4 X 400 relay at the Millrose games in Madison Square Garden. The New Jersey teams will race against two teams selected from Long Island New York and two teams selected from Westchester County New York.

The athlete of the meet goes to TJ Lynch for his exceptional performance despite a stomach virus. He ran a 7.8 on the second place 4 X high hurdle relay (team time of 32.0 is the second fastest time in the state to date) and a 52.1 on the second place 4 X 400 meter relay.

Shore Conference Class "B" South

A close meet won by Jackson Liberty. They scored 81.5 points to Monsignor Donovan's 77 points. We had a good meet with a lot of good performances. These included wins by Brandon Zisa in the 800 meters (2:02.3), Graham Matthews in the 1600 meters (4:43.5) and the 4 X 400 of Sean Fitzgerald, Mark Viggiano, Nick Chiarella, and TJ Lynch in an exciting (3:34.1).

The athlete of the meet goes to Brandon Zisa for a great effort to win the 800 meters.

The County relays are next Saturday. We can win. The match ups are in our favor and we will "let the dogs out", by not holding anything back.

Results are posted here.
